Here is another example of where the inexpensive Wiimote controller with all of its built in sensors nicely adapts itself to an other application. In this case the wiimote is used to determine how good a tennis serve is!
“Well that sounded like a plan so I poped open my wiimote soldered in a few wires to the minus key and then taped the wiimote to left arm (I am right handed).
Then I taped the other end of the wires to my thumb and wrapped a tennis ball in aluminum. So now when I had the ball in my hand it completed the circuit and pressed the button which registers the data in the software. I then toss the ball and when it leaves my hand it unpresses the button stopping the registry of the data from the accelerometer.”

Nintendo has added a new attachment for the Wiimote, it promises to add a new level of excitement to new Wii games.
“we are able to create a 6 DOF IMU for under $40. Thanks Nintendo! Best of all, everything is I2C so only 2 analog inputs (A4 and A5 needed for the wire library) are needed to read 6 sensors and no ADC conversion happens on the arduino board.”

Have a look at this Wii NxtBalance Robot Rolling around. Looks like the Wiimote was made for this use!
“What you need:
* lego NXT with OSEK firmware and the NXTway-gs program loaded
* a wiimote of course
* ubuntu and python with bluetooth modules
* rfcomm,pybluez and pyserial
* a python script to parse the wiimote data and send it to the lego nxt”

You may remember the Wiitar that we featured before. Well the creator has made a build log of it so that we can see some behind the scenes creation of the musical device.
“To fit the wiimote board inside the guitar (in this case, an Ibanez RG series), I carved the middle section between the tremolo cavity and the electronics cavity(a chisel paired with a hammer did the job) .To place it further inside the electronics cavity, I carved a pocket close the outer wall. With this way, wiimote board fits in with minimal carving, still leaving room for batteries and other circuits in the tremolo cavity.”

When you add a wiimote to a cool hexapod robot the results are great (if not a bit creepy).

Here is a cool way to control your Webcam! With a flick of your wrist this camera is moved to the location you want. If you want more have a look at this other project that does something similar.

If you need a way to protect your cubicle at work this Wiimote Controlled Coil Gun should fit the bill.
Video after the jump.
“In this setup I use a python script and MoteDaemeon to bring the events into my laptop’s domain. Of course I could script up a number of local events but what I wanted to do was act on that data and sending commands to an ioBridge module.
So I build a website which monitors the position from one axis of the wiimote and extrapolates that position to a servo output on a remote ioBridge module (which happens to be in my office, but doesn’t have to be). I’m also tracking some of the button inputs and can expand easilly to include other axes as well!”

This LED heart was hacked so that it could be controlled by a Wii Nunchuck.
Video after the jump.
“Recently I ordered the kit for an OpenHeart: an LED panel in the shape of a heart that uses charlieplexing to minimize the number of I/Os required to address the LEDs. The instructions were great and I picked up some tips to make my soldering better. The author made it very easy, even providing a flash-based programmer that lets you define your animation sequence and writes the code for you, so for animations all you need to do is cut-and-paste the code into the Arduino IDE and download it.”

Next time you are leveling a surface grab your wiimote instead of your spirit level!
“Missing a spirit level at home, I decided to use the Wiimote as a replacement. Over time, this tool evolved to something more like a protractor. Put the wiimote on a surface you want to use as a reference and press A. This will start a calibration for minimum and maximum values of your Wiimote, afterwards you can put it on a target surface to see the difference in inclination.”

We have see the cool head tracking using the wiimote that Johnny Lee designed. Mediacreator has taken that lead and took it farther. Now with either a stereo TV or some 3D glasses you can see the actual depth of the rings. I can’t wait to see what type of games use this technology!
“We were inspired by Johnny Lee’s Youtube movie about VR Head tracking with the Wii Remote. We thought it would be cool if Johnny’s concept could actually be shown in stereoscopic 3D.”
