Here are the steps to use a horse to play a video game by using a wiimote to capture your actions.

Video after the jump.

“1. Buy, Beg, Borrow Steal a Spring Horse
2. Install Blue tooth adapter HW & SW Drivers
3. Sync WiiMote with PC
4. Affix WiiMote to Horse (I used painter’s tape to Horse’s hind quarters (See 00:27 in video)
5. Install GlovePie
6. Load joystick script in GlovePie (included in GlovePie)
7. Load Need for Speed (PC Game)
8. Configure the controls in NFS by moving the Horse when assigning keys for:
1. Accelerate
2. Brake
3. Left
4. Right
5. Change View (Optional)
9. Hook up to Large Display (Optional but preferable)
10. Move Furniture out of the way
11. Start Game
12. Lean forward, Elbows in, hands tightly gripping handle

3D Head Tracking using a Wiimote

Categories: Insane, PC Connect, Video, Wiimote Hack.

Wow, this is a cool use of the Wiimote! Leave it to Johnny Lee to keep dreaming up cool uses for it.

Video after the jump.

“Using the infrared camera in the Wii remote and a head mounted sensor bar (two IR LEDs), you can accurately track the location of your head and render view dependent images on the screen. This effectively transforms your display into a portal to a virtual environment. The display properly reacts to head and body movement as if it were a real window creating a realistic illusion of depth and space. By Johnny Chung Lee, Carnegie Mellon University.”

Wii Play with Drums – Wiimote Drum Sampler

Categories: PC Connect, Video, Wiimote Hack.

Wii Play with Drums is some cool software that lets you play the drums with your Wiimote!

“What you will need to run it (assuming you have a windows XP pc):
1. Wiimote
2. bluetooth adapter
3. The software
And that’s pretty much it. You may also need .Net2.0, but most people should already have it.”

Wiimote Lego Tank Surveillance Robot

Categories: PC Connect, Video, Wiimote Hack.

This robot is connected to a computer and the Wiimote is used to drive it around, the robot mounted camera is used to see that the robot is looking at.

Video after the jump.

“This robot is composed of Legos and uses a handyboard as the control hardware. It has 4 wheel drive each controlled by a lego motor, and a pan tilt mount for directing light and the video camera. The Wii Remote talks to a MacBook Pro over bluetooth to modified DarwiinRemote software, and the computer in turn communicates with the robot over a serial port. This robot was designed for and used in a small scale demonstration of Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) as an assignment in Intro to Robotics at Carnegie Mellon University. Designed, built, and programmed by Andrew Hundt, Boris Lipchin, and Ned Fox at CMU.”

Wiimote Car Acceleration Monitoring

Categories: PC Connect, Wiimote Hack.

No need for expensive acceleration monitoring hardware when you can simply strap a Wiimote in for the ride.

“I got this idea after seeing some physics class use the wiimote in some kinda pendulum experiment.

Why not use the wiimote’s built in 3-axis accelerometers to measue g-forces, acceleration and even calculate my own 0-60mph times!

So I did. I wrote a script to dump all the g-force readings from the wiimote to a comma separated value file, then did some post processing in MS Excel, and voila, I can see every bump, every curve, my acceleration and braking, and even calculated my current speed using high school physics (v=a*t)

I even convinced my coworker to take me out in his E46 M3 to measure his SMG’s performance

I admit, it’s not super accurate since the wiimote spits out G readings rounded to two decimal places. It also provides other acceleration readings in finer granularity, but I couldn’t figure out what metric it was recording in. I used Gs since I knew it was just the acceleration of gravity (9.8 m/s/s).”

Wiimote Telescope Control

Categories: PC Connect, Video, Wiimote Hack.

Here is a Wiimote that has been rigged up to control a telescope. The Wiimote seems to be such a natural hand control I could see this type of interface finding its way into many products.

Video after the jump.

“Kingjamez wanted a simple way to control his telescope. A Wiimote and some software ended up being the perfect solution for his automated telescope project. At the Howard Astro League star party last night, I was showing off the moon to kids through a video camera. I wanted to pan around the moon to show the kids different parts of the surface. Since I was using EQMOD with no joystick I had to use the directional pads on the laptop. It was very cumbersome.”
