Mod the D2B Wii - This model has missing chip pins

Categories: Mod Chip, Video.

The new Wii models have a new feature… Some of the pins have been cut preventing the easy install of a mod chip. The chip is usually marked as a D2B chip. There are two technique for installing a mod chip in these systems, you can simply solder the small stub back onto the pad where it should go. Or you can grind away some of the top of the chip so that you can solder to the wires that are located in the chip.

“Here is how I handle these cut chips without grinding…

* Strip some 30gauge wire and flux it and tin it really well.
* Apply flux to the cut area on the chip.
* Steadily hold the wire vertically so that the wire makes contact with the solder pad on the board and the stub where the leg was cut.
* Apply your iron on the wire pressing it onto the stub/chip.
* Cut extra wire, install mod chip as normal and test.
* Once verified as working apply some hot glue just to make sure nothing moves.”

Cyclowiz Wii Modchip Install Video

Categories: Mod Chip.

If you have been thinking about installing the Cyclowiz Wii mod chip, this video shows you the install technique.

Video after the jump.

Here are some details about the Cyclowiz chip:
“The CycloWiz modchip is the second Nintendo Wii Drivechip to be released to the public. Drivechips work by injecting code into the DVD-ROM telling it that the homebrew/backup disc is a legitmate program which can be run on the Nintendo Wii. Sadly, Drivechips are limited to certain functions and do not allow you to run unsigned Nintendo Wii code thus disabling homebrew developers from utilizing the power of the Nintendo Wii’s hardware. Luckily though you can still boot your GameCube homebrew. One must remember that it was one of the first chips to arrive so it only features basic functionality.”

The mod chips for the Wii keep on coming. Here is another that looks like it is simple to install.

“just got a few prototype of solderless chip in, did improve a bit more since this version was designed (month ago) new ones have pin headers to enable updating of the chip just a teaser atm still havnt tested it yet since i dont have any wii without a chip atm but will let you know soon how it works out. also when the final upgradeable version is tested and successful i will release a gerber file so you guys can produce it also via pcb fabs or homemade

heres some pictures of the proto was planning to make 2 versions upgradeable and non upgradeable but dumping this design and going with the upgradeable ones which are slightly bigger. also if the current prototype works out fine then i will produce a bunch of the second batch for reviews”

Chiip - Open Source Wii Mod Chip

Categories: Mod Chip, Wii Console Hack.

Another open source mod chip for the Wii, this one is called Chiip.

“Chiip is yet another modchip for the Nintendo Wii. The difference between Chiip and the other Wii modchips currently available is the fact that you can build it yourself.

It works because a single microcontroller is all the current Wii modchips need - the Wiinja is a perfect example, but the other current modchips are very similar in fact.

Building Chiip is a two-step procedure:

* The first step is building a small device that allows uploading firmware to a microcontroller, by connecting it to a PC.
Building this device took me 0.94 € and about 2/3 of all the work, but it’s a device that you can reuse for a whole number of cool things. (Just search the web for projects using a microcontroller, and you should soon get an idea of how many cool things you can do with it). You will also update the firmware with this device.
I’m planning to release more cool-things-to-do-with-a-cheap-microcontroller projects myself every now and then, like interfacing other kinds of controllers to a Wii, and maybe similar modchips for other video game consoles too.
* The second step is building the modchip itself.
The bare minimum to build a single working modchip may take just about 1.70 € and no soldering at all, but even with the optional stuff (like a socket for updating the chip and a status LED) it took me just 2.38 €.”

CycloWiz Wii Mod Chip Review

Categories: Mod Chip, Wii Console Hack.

The CycloWiz is an easy to install Wii mod chip.
More pictures after the jump.

“One of the very interesting aspects of the CycloWiz is how you don’t need any wire to install it. Simply fill the holes with solder, and the installation is done! Nothing revolutionary here, Xbox chips offered this possibility for ages, and XenoGC offers it on Gamecube. Still, it’s a very handy feature that will save you some installation time.

Near the quick-solder pads you have small solder pads, so if for some reason you prefer to install your chip using wires, you can do it. The five quick-solder pads on CycloWiz are very well designed. The chip is very easy to align and you have enough space to manipulate your soldering iron without worrying about damaging components.”

Wiip - Open Source Wii Mod Chip

Categories: Mod Chip, Wii Console Hack.

Looks like a cheap way to mod the Wii is just around the corner!

“TCNISO’s Wiip modchip isn’t available on their online store yet. However, what’s very interesting about their modchip is that they’re willing to share the schematics, code, and software involved with the chip so that you can make one yourself for less than US$ 10. If you’re too lazy to do all the soldering and whatnot, the Wiip modchip itself should retail for US$ 20 including shipping.

The Wiip will allow you to boot backup discs and works by utilizing a simple microcontroller that communicates with the serial port of the Wii’s hybrid DVD drive and overrides certain parts of the media’s data stream. The current features of the modchip include:

* Upgradability! Device is bundled with an easy to use programming cable.
* 20 MHz AVR microcontroller with 2KB of EEPROM (SMD type)
* Customizable (via open source code)
* Boots Wii games (DVD R / DVD-R media)
* Boots GC games and homebrew
* AudioFix (naturally)
* On board DIP switch (enable/disable mod, enable/disable stealth)
* Works on DMS / D2A chipsets (sorry, we haven’t worked on D2B yet)”
