Solar Powered Wii

Categories: Insane.

Play your Wii with no power plugs around.

“Tom’s Hardware Guide recently built a mobile Wii station, complete with an HD monitor, that’s powered in part by a solar energy (check out the Tom’s Workshop video of the project). It’s a simple invention on many levels. For one, it didn’t cost much at all to find a battery, power converter and appropriately-sized solar power panel. And the station itself is just wood with a couple of wheels and a coat of blue paint slapped on. For this purposes of this experiment, we decided to keep the costs low and create a repeatable formula in case anyone else wanted to try something similar. THG video editor Ben Meyer and lab manager Shelton Rohmanyi procured the parts, while Shelton and THG camera man Max Wilson put the actual station together. I left for Wondercon and GDC and by the time I got back a week later, the entire thing was completed. Here are the various parts with their respective prices (not including taxes or shipping fees):”

Wii Laptop Part 3 – Final Assembly

Categories: Insane, Wii Console Hack.

The final assembly of the Wii laptop.
More pictures after the jump.

“Ok, we’re back again for the thrilling conclusion of how-to make your own Wii laptop! In today’s final installment we’ll cut the case for the laptop, install all the parts, attach the screen and sound amplifier, and then connect everything together. Hopefully the extra detail [which, Ben tells us, is far beyond what he usually provides on his own site. -Ed.] will give you a good insight into how these devices are created and provide inspiration for your own personal hacks.”

Nintendo Wii Phone?

Categories: Insane.

Is there going to be more Wii items available in the near future? Possibilities are quite good that there might be…

“According to rumors, Nintendo are planning to release the Nintendo Wii Phone. The company may see it as an opportunity to compete with Apple iPhone and Microsoft Zune Phone. Stay tuned for more updates!

We never would’ve thought Nintendo was looking to the mobile phone industry with any kind of plans for branching out, but according to the linked patent, which was filed in November 2001 and issued in June 2006, they were (and could still be). The patent, which reads as “Electronic apparatus having game and telephone functions,” doesn’t really paint a picture. Luckily though, we yanked some screens from Engadget, so check them out after the post break.”

Wiimote Gun Mod

Categories: Insane, Wiimote Hack.

This mod might make the wiimote easier to hang onto.

“While a few may be modding their Wii controllers to a tennis racket or a golf club, now, even the Wiimote can be used as a gun! Specific details on how the controller was modded isn’t known, but what seems to be for sure was that the B key was wired in with the trigger so that the Wiimote gun will actually be useful in a shooting game with the Wii.

DJ with the WiiJ using the Wiimote

Categories: Insane, Video, Wiimote Hack.

Move over DJ turn table and say hello to the DJ WiiJ.
Video after the jump.

“Welcome to DJ Wiij. The first and original djing website dedicated to using Nintendo Wiimotes. As much of a gimmick this looks like, it really works like a charm. But dont take my word for it, find out yourself. Use one of the many tutorials and premade setups to get started. The great thing about Wiijing is that it is totally customizable, though I think you might find the premade setups have most of what you would need. Also if you yourself are interested in Wiijing, I am hoping to get a Wiij community started on this website shortly, so that Wiij’s can post mixes, give tips, ask questions and network.”

WiiBot – sword-wielding, tennis-playing, WiiMote-controlled, friendly robot

Categories: Funny, Insane, Video, Wiimote Hack.

I can see this cool robot creating the first Wiimote related death… But in all seriousness what a great job interfacing the controller to an industrial arm!
Video after the jump.

“Brian and I were talking in his office a couple weeks ago about the Kuka robots’ fast reactions to serial data, and I realized, hey, why not hook it to a WiiMote? We had both fallen for Nintendo’s plucky little controller like everyone else, and had seen plenty of other WiiMote hacks. It had been a number of weeks of work without any rest, so we decided to set aside the coming Saturday to hook up one of the robots to a WiiMote.

The idea was to take one industrial robot, add a laptop talking to a WiiMote, strap on a tennis racket, have it follow the swings that the user makes, and do it all in a few hours on a Saturday so we could get back to our busy schedules. Of course we had to put on a sword too, and if there was time, maybe an Airsoft gun. Also, we wanted it to fight people, but you can’t have everything.

I dragged myself out of bed at noon-thirty and called Brian to see if he still wanted to try the Wii hack. We met at the office (where we spend most of our Saturdays) and I set to work on the WiiMote-to-robot software. He began the epic process of attaching a tennis racket to the KR16 and programming the physical motions into it.

A KR16 is a small industrial robot by Kuka. There were a couple in the shop waiting to be installed for various industrial projects. The one we were using had a polishing wheel on it.”
